5 a Day Public Health Initiative

Many of us have been there. After a particularly heavy drinking session down the pub, we wander into the local kebab shop and choose the largest burger which is adorned with slices of cheese. Accompanying this is an order of cheese-covered chips doused in salt. Right now, many are bound to be salivating at the prospect of this as they actually partake in such activities. In between these times of heavy drinking, they might dine out at a local restaurant and choose to have a steak washed down by further alcohol. Once again, many see this as their preferred way to spend a Saturday.

In the scenario described, the persons mentioned lead an unhealthy regime which, although the food and drink they taste may be a taste sensation, does not provide our body with the necessary nutrition which it needs in order to fully function. It is urged by every single doctor for people to consume fruit and vegetables on a regular basis.

What to eat?

We all know the government’s public health initiative to make 5 a day a part of all our diets. It is advised that the person eats five 80g portions of fruit and vegetables a day. This portion could be included on the side of a main meal. Even if the main item of food which is being consumed is not entirely healthy, this is supported by this nutritiously rich serving. This is perhaps one of the more important public health initiatives around. There is now a logo on food packets to inform people to help people choose a healthier diet and understand which fruits and vegetables are part of their five a day.

Unlike processed foods, fresh fruit and vegetables taste wonderful. They can be eaten raw and are considerably cheaper than buying that meal for one which is normally high in fatty acids, salt and saturated fats. Eating fruits and vegetables leads to a whole host of life giving benefits, such as distancing yourself from many types of cancer, diabetes and even obesity.

Which ones?

Tomatoes, beans, pulses, grapes, carrots, cauliflower and spinach are all examples of which ones to eat, and it is recommended that you include these in your diet as much as you can as they give you unbelievable health benefits. One popular category of fruit and vegetables is what is known as “super fruits”. High in anti-oxidants and other life giving nutrients, examples of the fruit found here include blackcurrants, cherries, bananas, gooseberries, strawberries and peaches.

Fruit and vegetables needn’t be as expensive as you think. Fair-trade products are normally more expensive than those which are not grown in these circumstances but supermarkets and grocers alike are always offering deals for their customers. It needn’t cost the earth for people to lead a healthy diet and, through the inclusion of fruit and vegetables in your diet, this is more than achievable.
