What is Family Balancing?

Family balancing refers to the process through which parents, together with their fertility clinic, actively decide the gender of an embryo to transfer following an IVF cycle, so that they achieve a specific gender composition within their family. This practice is usually popular among couples who already have only boys or only girls already, and who would like to be able to have children of the opposite sex too, to “balance” their family – hence the name of the procedure.

Although it is simplistically mistaken for gender selection, family balancing goes beyond merely deciding whether one wants a boy or a girl. Family balancing is often a well-thought-out, intentional choice, made by families who want to enrich their family dynamics, by raising children of both genders, with all the emotional, cultural, and social advantages this brings.

The most commonly used and precise method is Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidies (PGT-A) performed during an IVF cycle. Following this step, the embryo of the preferred gender is transferred into the woman’s uterus.

Another method, far less accurate, may involve sperm sorting, which is a process where sperm is separated into X chromosome carriers (leading to female offspring) and Y chromosome carriers (leading to male offspring). The optimal path is to discuss the pros and the cons of both methods with your fertility clinic, and to ask them about their success rates.

Even if it has become more common in recent years, family balancing still raises ethical debates among mass media, medical professionals, and the public.
